This week, I went to the California Science Center with my class. At the California Science Center, my class participated in making roller coasters. We used something that looked like a long rubber rope as the track, and a marble to represent a roller coaster cart. After our time was up, my class observed the roller coasters we had made in our groups. After we did the roller coasters, we headed into the entrance of the California Science Center and walked around the Science Center. When we entered the California Science Center, my class went up the escalators and headed to a room which took us a way to the Endavour. My class and I walked in the giant room where the room had space things such as a space simulator and an astronaut toilet. 😜 We walked into a small place where there was a giant screen that showed a video of how the Endavour made its trip to the California Science Center. We watched the Endavour make its way through the streets of Los Angeles with many people watching it drive down streets. When we finished watching the video, my classmates and I headed to the giant warehouse where the Endavour was located. The Endavour was huge! It had many interesting and spectacular features to see, and I was so happy. On the walls of the warehouse, it showed pictures and the history of some spaceships. After that, our chaperones in our groups walked to different areas and zones in the Science center where we learned about animals, marine life, and much more. Nearly at the end of the day, my friend Madison and I took a picture with a Disney Channel star who was the mom on a Disney show called, "Good Luck Charlie". californiasciencecenter.org

This week, President Barack Obama said her farewell speech. This was very sad to hear and thinking about in my opinion because Obama has been our president for eight years. It is hard to say goodbye to someone who has devoted his life to America and taking care of America. Although President Obama made a few mistakes during his eight years as president, he cared for America through the difficult struggles that our country has had. Barack Obama and his family were kind and caring people as they helped those who had to face sad experiences such as natural disasters and terrorism. In Obama's emotional final speech to the nation, he said his goodbyes to everyone who helped, cared, and believed in him. Obama thanked his family for always being my his side throughout his road to being a great role model who inspired many people. In Obama's farewell speech, he thanked his Michelle Obama for not being just his wife and mother of his children, but for also being his best friend. Michelle Obama took on a role that she did not ask for but she made it her own with all her wonderful and positive traits that made her successful. After the great round of applause he received. President Barack Obama started to tear up a little bit which made it a little hard to watch because again, it is hard to say goodbye to someone that we have known for eight years. Barack Obama also thanked his daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama. He thanked them for growing up to be amazing young women and thanked his daughters for everything they have done. President Obama said that Malia is beautiful and smart, but most importantly that they are kind thoughtful, and full of passion. The crowd started to become cheerful and a little emotional when Barack Obama said, "Out of all the things I've done, I am most proud to be your dad." This was a very touching farewell speech because it showed that Obama really cared about our country and that it is going to be a difficult transition to our new president, Donald Trump. 👎🏻🇲🇽 http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/10/politics/barack-obama-farewell-speech/index.html This week, Donald Trump announced that he wants to cancel his Air Force One order. As every president, Trump will have his Air Force One Jet since he was elected president. The government plans to build new and improved Air Force One jets. On Tuesday, Donald Trump posted a tweet that said, "Boeing is building a brand new 747 Air Force One for future presidents, but costs are out of control, more than $4 billion. Cancel order!" Donald Trump responded to reporters by saying, "Well the plane is totally out of control. It's going to be over $4 billion for [the] Air Force One program," he said. "And I think it's ridiculous. I think Boeing is doing a little bit of a number. We want Boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money." "Boeing source familiar with the program told CNN that the company can't even estimate the cost of the program, since "the Pentagon has not even decided all the bells and whistles it wants on the new Air Force One." The Boeing Company doesn't even know the cost of the Air Force One yet. The Boeing official responded with, "We are not sure where he is getting that number from," "The statistics that have been cited [by Trump], shall we say, don't appear to reflect the nature of the financial arrangement between Boeing and the Department of Defense," said Obama White House spokesman Josh Earnest. Boeing's current contract allows it "to help determine the capabilities of these complex military aircraft that serve the unique requirements of the President of the United States." Throughout the recent years, the Air Force has budgeted $2.9 billion through 2021 for two new Air Force Ones. They'll replace many things such as the aging pair of blue, white and polished aluminum 747-200Bs currently serving the President. The new planes aren't expected to be ready until 2022. The Air Force has already spent about $93 million in order to build the new jets. The $93 million is included in Boeing's current contract. "We look forward to working with the U.S. Air Force on subsequent phases of the program allowing us to deliver the best planes for the President at the best value for the American taxpayer," said Boeing.Trump's comment shows that he's looking for ways to cut government costs where he can, according to his spokesman Jason Miller. "The point that the President-elect was making here was that a $4 billion price tag is a very big number, the taxpayers want to make sure we're seeing absolute accountability and that the government is doing the best to drive costs down," he said. Earnest told reporters aboard Air Force One that the planes need to be upgraded. In January of 2013, when the Boeing 787 Dreamliner had problems due to its batteries, Trump tweeted that he had bought just bought stock in Boeing at depressed prices, calling it a "great company!" I think this is absolutely unnecessary. Donald Trump is an arrogant and childish businessman who claims to be rich. If he always brags that he is rich, why should he complain about the price of the Air Force One jet? Many Boeing employees were realeased after this mayhem that was caused by, the one and only, Trump. I think this was not okay because my grandma works for Boeing which makes her job's reputation look bad.

In ELA, I learned that a prepositional phrase is made up of a preposition, the object of a preposition, and any modifiers of the object. A prepositional phrase can be used as an adjective which then becomes an adjective phrase. For example, in the sentence, "Did they see the ruins of the mission?" the adjective phrase is "of the mission" because it modifies ruins. Other example are "Did they reach the caves of the mountain?" And "Did they see the veterans of the army?" In the first sentence, the adjective phrase is "of the mountain" because it is modifying the word "caves. In the second sentence, the adjective phrase is "of the army" because it is modifying "veterans". A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a predicate. A dependent clause does not express a complete thought. Some dependent clauses are used as adjectives which is an adjective clause. An example of an adjective clause is in the sentence, "California, which was once part of the Spanish Empire, has many historic sites. An adjective clause usually begins with a relative pronoun (who, whom, which that) or a subordinate conjunction (where, when). A restrictive adjective clause is necessary for the meaning of a sentence. An example of a restrictive adjective clause is in the sentence, "I learned about the mission that is famous for its swallows." A nonrestrictive clause is not necessary to the meaning. "San Juan Capistrano, which is a town on the Pacific Coast, dates back to the 1700s. This is nonrestrictive. This is what I have learned this week in ELA. For more information go to: hosbeg.com/adjectival-phrases-and-clauses/ This week, there have been many anti-Trump protests in Los Angeles. After Donald Trump was elected as president, many people disagreed and held protests throughout the streets of Los Angeles. On Saturday, over 8,000 Trump protesters crowded the streets, and chanted, "Trump is not our president." Many angry and upset people protested, including LAUSD high school students. LAUSD staff members forced their students to protest. The teenagers did so, and hundreds of protesting students scattered around Los Angeles. In the afternoon, school buses began to arrive at Los Angeles City Hall, and returned the students to their schools. Administrators at the schools started to warn students that they would be suspended if they missed their classes. I think that this was unnecessary because the students were forced to protest by the faculty and staff of the LAUSD high schools. I feel that these protests are unimportant because there is nothing that congress can do to impeach Donald Trump. Donald Trump is now our president, and we should accept the fact that he is our president now. Protesters don't know what Trump will do yet because he hasn't been president yet, and congress needs to accept his plans and ideas before they allow his ideas to happen. I believe that these national protests were unnecessary because it wasted people's time such as the police officers who witnessed and made sure that everyone was kept in peace. My uncle, a police officer, had to spend his time at the protests and rallies which was not fair to him and his family. This celebration is a famous holiday called All Saints Day. As a tribute to the saints and All Saints Day, my school's middle and I had an All Saints Day celebration. Each middle school student received a saint to study about and dress up as. The saint I was assigned was St. Catherine of Bologna. I made a flyer/brochure about St. Catherine of Bologna which was very interesting. Some things that I learned about her was that she was born on September 8, 1413 and was the companion of Princess Margarita. After Princess Margarita became married, Catherine became a nun, and lived a spiritual and holy life. She wrote a book called "The Seven Spiriutal Weapons." At 49 years old, she died from an illness. Catherine was buried without a coffin, and her body still sits in the Poor Clares convent. I liked learning about St. Catherine of Bologna because she had a passion for art and music, and she is the patron saint of artists and the arts which is awesome! Representing St. Catherine of Bologna, I was able to dress up as her and pretend to be her at my middle school celebration. I was able to bond with the middle schoolers in my school, and I was able to learn about other saints. I think this was a fun middle school bonding because I saw different kids dressed up as other Saints which was very interesting. For More information about All Saints Day: www.catholic.org/saints/allsaints/ This week, I learned about hyperboles, personification, metaphors, and similes. These things are very important in the world of literature because it allows creativity and detail in stories. The first thing I learned about was similes. I learned that similes are used in sentences to compare two unlike things, using like or as. For example, "Speak Now" by Taylor Swift involves many similes. In her song, the lyrics say, "Wearing a gown shaped like a pastry." Another simile in "Speak Now" by Taylor Swift is, "A song that sounds like a death march." Both similes in Taylor Swift's song use the word "like" to make a simile. A metaphor is a comparison of two unlike things by saying that one is a dissimilar object or things. In the song "Life is a Highway" by Rascal Flatts, metaphors are repeated multiple times. For example, the lyrics say, "Life's like a road you travel on." Another metaphor is "Sometime you bend, sometimes you stand. Sometimes you turn your back to the wind." Another thing I learned about was personification. Personification is a work of literature that gives human qualities to non-living things. In "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day, the lyrics say"I walk a lonely rode where the city sleeps" We can realize that there is personification in those lyrics because a road does not hAve feelings, therefore a road can't be lonely. Lastly, I learned about an important part of literature which is called a hyperbole. A hyperbole is an exaggeration that cannot possibly be true and is not meant to be taken literally. In Bruno Mar's "Just the Way You are" the lyrics mention many hyperboles such as, " Oh, her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they aren't shining." This involves a hyperbole because it is not possible to outshine stars, and it is definitely not possible to have eyes brighter than stars. This is what I learned in the past two weeks. Two police officers were one of the first cops to respond to a family disturbance call in Palm Springs. 63 year-old, Jose Gilbert Vega, a 35-year veteran, preparing for retirement in December was one of the two officers that were killed. The other officer was 27 year-old, Lesley Zerebny. Lesley was new to police force as she was back from maternity leave to her four-month-old daughter. At the home they arrived to, the two officers tried to talk with a worried and upset man, asking him to step out of his residence. Instead, the man shot the police from behind the front door that was closed. The two officers were rushed to the hospital where they later died from their wounds. This is very sad because it is hard to deal with death. When I hear about these stories on the news, I feel very sorrowful and unhappy. It hurts to hear about these things because officers are doing all they can to protect us. I don't like that our world is full of hate and violence. I think the world should be filled with happiness and world peace. I am very grateful that we have police officers in our society and in our world. They are our heroes, and we should thank and admire all the officers that are willing to care for us and make a difference in our world. Jose and Lesley were very brave, and I cannot thank them enough for their service and courage that they gave to us. Information supported by CNN.com For more information about this story: This week, the presidential debate was held. It was held on Wednesday, September 26, 2016. The presidential debate involved Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The two democratic and republican candidates in the presidential election had been preparing for this event to come. This was a very big day for Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton because this would be the day where they can get more people to join the republican and democratic Party. This was a day that Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump can get more people to join their parties, and to get more people to vote for them. In this presidential election, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump talked about tuition free colleges, taxes, education, and plans that they would achieve and plan as presidents (which was mostly Hillary Clinton). During the presidential debate, Hillary Clinton focused on the questions that were given to her, but Donald Trump talked about off topic situations/plans, and was too focused on "bad mouthing" Hillary such as making fun of her, and I think Trump was too concerned on giving rude remarks to Hillary. Although I do not like Hillary Clinton, I think that she had very good speeches, and was an excellent speaker. The only downside to her speeches, was that her plans were not satisfying or impressing. In one of Clinton's speeches, she said that she plans to have tuition free schools. My main concern is how teaches will be paid. Tuition free schools means that there will be a rise in taxes which is more money to the government. I think this will cause more people to lose their jobs. Donald Trump however, did have a few ideas that I did agree with. Trump also told America that people are focusing a little too much on the idea of him building a wall. He says that we should not just be focused on that, but his other ideas. Yet the election was not so much of a success, polls say that Hillary won this election. To see the full debate go to: youtu.be/855Am6ovK7s This week I learned something new. I learned about theme in literature. I found learned new things about them that I never thought about. Let me tell you about theme. Theme is one of the most important elements in literature. Theme is the main idea of a work of literature. It is the meaning/ message of a story. The theme applies to everyone, not just the characters in a book. It is universal. The theme is bigger than the characters. A subject/topic is not like a theme. There is a difference between these two things. A subject is a word or two talking about the topic of a story. The subject is more of an opinion than a theme. The theme expresses the subject, and what the author/writer is trying to say. We can make generalizations using a theme. Literary work is an example of the real world. The author allows you too see the world from a character's perspective. A good work of literature can be difficult because it can contain many themes. A theme should support evidence, and should be well written. There are different ways you can look for a good theme. One way is by observing a character in a book. Ask yourself if he/she has changed throughout the book. Sometimes, The theme of a book is hidden in the title. Another way you can look for a good theme is if an author states the theme at the end of a story. Lastly, you can look for a theme in a conflict of a book. This is just some information that I learned about theme, and this can help people understand the message of a theme.
